Marrakech pulls you in. The souks, the call to prayer, the crush of the Jemaa el-Fnaa at dusk, it is one of the great sensory cities, and you should absolutely lose an afternoon in it. But there is a question every traveller eventually asks after a day inside the walls: where do I go to breathe out? For us, the answer has always been the same. You head for the Atlas foothills, ten kilometres south of the medina, where the city loosens its grip and the mountains come into view.
This is the case for staying outside Marrakech rather than in the middle of it, and why a luxury riad outside the medina may be the version of the city you remember most fondly.
Space you can actually feel
Riads inside the medina are beautiful, but they are built into a dense, ancient street plan. Rooms are often compact, walls are shared, and the courtyard is the only outdoor air you get. Step out of the front door and you are straight back into the crowd. It is romantic for a night or two; it can be tiring for a week.
Out here the arithmetic changes. Daba Village sits in its own gardens, with courtyards, a pool, wide terraces and the horizon left open. You can walk without weaving around anyone. Children have somewhere to run. The suites are generous rather than tucked-in. Space, it turns out, is the real luxury, the thing you cannot buy back once the day gets busy.
The mountains as a backdrop
There is a reason people photograph the Atlas at dawn and dusk. From the foothills the range shifts colour through the day, and on clear winter mornings the peaks hold their snow. You wake to that view instead of to a light well. Whether you are practising yoga on the rooftop or simply having coffee in the garden, the scenery does quiet, unglamorous work on your nervous system.
Close enough to have both
The worry, understandably, is missing out, booking somewhere peaceful and then feeling marooned. You are not. The medina is a short drive away, and our private chauffeur service makes the trip in and out simple: go in for the souks, the palaces and dinner, then come home to silence. You get the city on your terms and the calm as your baseline, rather than the other way round. For trips further out, we can arrange excursions toward the mountain villages and beyond.
A day that belongs to you
Staying in the foothills reshapes the rhythm of a trip. Mornings are slow, breakfast from the farm kitchen, a swim, the gardens. Afternoons can go either way: a hammam and massage without leaving the property, or a run into town. Evenings end under the stars rather than under streetlights. Nothing is far, and nothing is rushed.
If wellness is your reason for coming, you might read next about a morning of yoga in the Atlas foothills. If it is food, our farm-to-table kitchen is where the day begins and ends.
Who this suits
The foothills are not for everyone, and that is the point. If you want to fall out of a nightclub into your bed, stay in the centre. But if you are a couple after quiet, a family that needs room, a group booking the whole property, or simply a traveller who has done the medina before and wants a different Marrakech this time, this is the side of the city worth discovering.
